St. Edmund honors athletes

The St. Edmund winter sports banquet was held Wednesday with the football, basketball, cheerleaders and dance team being honored for their accomplishments.

The Blue Jay football team recorded its first ever undefeated regular season record of 9-0 and won the District 6-1A title before being pushed out of the state playoffs by Cedar Creek.

Zack Fuselier was selected as the team’s Best Offensive Lineman, while Edward Turk was named Best Offensive Back.

Trevor Hargroder was selected Best Defensive Back, while Alex Rozas earned Best Defensive Lineman honors and was given the Joe Nagata Award.

Blue Jay quarterback Marshall Arabie was named the team’s MVP, while Taylor Eval was given the Jerry Hoffpauir Award for Most Outstanding Player.

Arabie (5-9, 175, Sr.) passed for 1,703 yards passing with 29 touchdowns and three interceptions. Arabie also gained 860 yards rushing with 10 touchdowns as he was named District 6-1A MVP and earned Honorable Mention All-State honors.

Turk (5-8, 160, Sr.) was named 6-1A first team running back as he gained 186 yards with three touchdowns in district play.

Rozas (45 tackles and seven sacks) and Eval (26.5 tackles, 20 assists, three sacks) played on both sides of the line.

Hargroder had 28.5 tackles 25 assists, two fumble recoveries and three interceptions this past season to earn All-State Honorable Mention.

In girls basketball, senior Leah Andrus was named as the team’s MVP and Best Offensive Player as a first team All-District 6-1A selection.

Andrus averaged 20.6 points per game.

Senior Anne-Marie Himel was named Best Defensive Player and senior Brittany Fontenot was given the Sportsmanship Award.

The Lady Jays finished 15-11 overall, 5-3 in district for a second place finish and a playoff berth.

In boys basketball, Devan Miller was named Best Defensive Player, while Eric Guillory was named Best Offensive Player and MVP as a first team All-District 6-1A selection after averaging 15.3 points per game.

The Blue Jays finished 8-13 overall and 6-2 in District for a second place spot and a playoff berth.
