The Broncos advanced to the state semi-finals with a quarter-final win over second-seeded East Ascension due to Jessie Browne, who delivered one her best pitching games of the year. Browne struck out 17 Lady Spartans, including two in the eighth inning, which helped lead Zachary to a 2-1 win.
Alex Stephens helped Zachary get their first run of the game when she singled in the sixth inning, and later scored on a double off Katie Browne. Stephens was solid at the plate for the Lady Broncos as she finished the game 2-for-4.
Tied going into the third inning of the quarter-final game on Saturday, May 1, the Broncos committed three costly errors which ultimately resulted in all three of STM’s runs.
The Lady Cougars opened their at-bat with a single, followed by the first error, which placed runners on first and second.
An intentional walk advanced the runners and loaded the bases, and the first run scored on a wild pitch. The additional runs for the Lady Cougars came on dropped balls in the infield.
Wind was a major factor in the game, forcing last minute adjustments on the part of the fielders.
St. Thomas More Coach, Joy Webre, attributed her team’s success in the wind to having played in adverse conditions all season long.
The Lady Cougars went on to win the 5A state champ title with a 4-3 win over Hahnville's Lady Tigers.
Zachary Coach Leslie Efferson said the Broncos had problems judging where in flight the ball was, due to the wind.
Along with the breezy conditions, the Broncos found hitting against the Lady Cougar pitching rather difficult. Not a single Zachary batter tallied more than one hit in the game.
Three Lady Bronco batters: Katie Browne, Mary Margaret Turner and Alex Stephens made all the hits for the Broncos.
Zachary pitcher Jessie Browne pitched extremely well against STM, allowing only three hits the entire game.
The Lady Broncos ended a very successful season as the District 5-5A Champions with a final record of 26-10, and a state semi-final appearance. Way to go, ladies!
